Hyundai and Kia have recalled 3.3 million vehicles due to a fire risk caused by potential problems with electronic modules. The recall affects 25 models from both brands, including the Elantra, Sonata, Santa Fe, and Sportage.
The specific problem is slightly different, depending on which brand you drive. For Hyundai vehicles, the issue is with the anti-lock brake module. For Kia vehicles, the issue is with the hydraulic electronic control unit.
In both cases, a brake fluid leak could cause an electrical short, which could lead to a fire. The fire could occur at any time, even when the vehicle is parked and turned off.
Hyundai and Kia are advising owners of affected vehicles to park outside until the issue can be addressed. The automakers will be sending out notifications to owners with instructions on how to schedule a repair appointment.
